Learners will become familiar with the value of recycling.

Learners will be able to identify which recycled materials are found in schools.

The Recycling Game cards (5 sets)

Paper to keep score

Procedure:

  1. Teacher Lecture: Teacher will introduce the unit and the driving question: What impact can we, as 5th graders, have on the environment through reducing, reusing and recycling? The students and teacher together will begin the Know, Wonder, and Learned chart. They will not be able to fill out the learned part until the last day, which is one way in which learning will be assessed.
  2. Student Activity: Students will be asked as a class to make a list of recycled material. This may be included in the Know, Wonder, Learn chart.
  3. Teacher Lecture: Teacher will introduce and explain the rules to The Recycle Game.
  4. Student Activity: Students will be given 20 minutes to play The Recycle Game.
  5. Student Activity: Students will be asked to share with the class what they learned from this exercise. The students will once again look at their chart and add or make changes to it. They will be asked to make a list of items at school and at home that they can recycle that they normally don’t.
  6. Student Activity: Students will be asked to choose three of their “I wonder” questions and propose an answer to that question. They will also write down where they plan on finding the answer to this question such as interviews, surveys, books or the internet.

Assessment:

I will be able to assess what the students learned by the discussion we have before and after the Recycle Game.
