Recycling Unit

Lesson 2: Video and Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Objectives:

Learners will be able to define reduce, reuse, recycle

Learners will be able to complete a list of materials that can be reduced, reused, recycled

Learns will become aware of how reducing, reusing and recycling effects our environment

Learners will list ways to reduce, reuse, recycle

Learners will make a class plan of action to reduce, reuse, recycle.

Materials:

The Magic School Bus Holiday Special

Large White paper to record goals

Markers

Procedure:

  1. Define the terms: reduce, reuse, recycle.
    1. Reduce – to use less.
    2. Reuse – to put again into service without changing
    3. Recycle – to put again into service with changing
  2. Student Activity: Have the students brainstorm how they think all our recycling and other efforts impact our environment. Do they think it is a waste of time? It is worth it? Does it really save our planet? The students will write a brief paragraph describing their feelings that will be turned in at the end of the class period.
  3. Teacher Lecture: Discuss the environmental benefits of recycling:
    1. When aluminum is recycled instead of refining ‘new’ aluminum, water and air pollution is decreased as well as consumption of energy.
    2. The recycling of motor oil keeps several toxic substances such as lead, cadmium, arsenic and benzene from polluting our land and air, not to mention the consumption of energy that is reduced in this process to clean as opposed to refining.
    3. The 3 R’s reduce the amount of waste produced and the resulting disposal problems. They are also less polluting, cheaper and more energy-efficient than taking new material from the environment.
  4. Student Activity: Students will then modify their reflection answering the same questions that they asked before, but writing any changes if their view changed. They will also be asked to make a list of ways that they can reduce, reuse and recycle. As a class, we will create a Plan of Action with goals for the classroom to achieve by the end of the Unit. We will assess these goals daily and individuals will record ways in which they have met the goals.
  5. Watch the video and introduce group project.

Assessment:

I will be able to asses the students’ learning based on the responses given in their reflection paragraphs and the goals we set in class.
